Neighborhood Schools
The neighborhood schools in Anchorage offer a top quality and well-rounded standard school education program. More than 90 percent of Anchorage School District students enjoy the comprehensive curriculum in the neighborhood schools. The district’s curriculum emphasizes the basic communication skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are schooled in mathematics, how to use a library and how to use and understand technology as a tool for learning and working. The standard program also includes social studies, health, science, physical education, art and music. Remedial and advanced classes are available in a variety of subjects.

Alternative and Specialized Programs

Open Enrollment Policy (zone exemptions/exceptions)
The Anchorage School District will continue with the limited open enrollment policy for students who wish to attend a school or program outside their regular attendance area. Gender and grade balances will be considered. No zone exemptions will be given for schools that have changed boundaries during the first year new boundaries are in effect.

- If applicants outnumber openings, a lottery determines a waiting list from which students enter the program when space becomes available. Two lotteries are held annually, if needed. The next lottery will take place in March. For more information, please call 742-4321.
Part-time Students
Students enrolled in correspondence, private or home school who wish to enroll part time (three classes or less) should contact district schools for an application form and register at the same time as district students.

Student Fees
Non-resident Tuition
By state law, all non-resident students attending schools of this district shall pay, in advance, the regular school tuition rate (AS 9.030). This law pertains to students whose parents are not residents of the Municipality of Anchorage and who are not in the custody of a district resident (ASD Policy Section 431.21). Student Parking
Students driving to school and parking on school grounds must register with the school office to obtain a parking permit. Vehicles parked on school grounds without parking permits are subject to fines and may be towed at the expense of the owner of the vehicle. The cost of the permit is $55 per semester. Release of Personal Information and Process for Opting Out
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act allows the district to publicly release “directory information” about students that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Directory information includes: student name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, year of birth, dates of attendance, enrollment, grade level, degrees and awards received, date of graduation, scholarship eligibility, name of secondary school most recently attended, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, and height and weight of members of interscholastic athletic teams.
Examples of publications include the annual yearbook, honor roll, graduation programs, a drama club playbill and sports activity sheets.
School officials may release directory information about a student without first obtaining parental consent, unless parents decline by completing a Release of Student Directory Information (PDF) form, which is available at each school.
In a few instances, the district is required by law to release certain contact information regarding high school students, unless parents decline. First, the district is required to provide to the University of Alaska (UA) the names and addresses of those students eligible for UA scholarship programs. Second, the district is required to provide student eligibility information to the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy (ACYA), a program for students who have dropped out of school. Third, upon receiving a request from military recruiters and/or institutions of higher learning, the district must provide students’ names, addresses, and telephone numbers.
Parents who decline the release of their student’s telephone numbers and directory information to military recruiters, UA and/or ACYA should complete a Release of Student Directory Information form (PDF).
Anchorage Youth Court
Anchorage Youth Court provides “Justice for Youth by Youth.” Trained middle and high school students from Anchorage and Chugiak/Eagle River strive to stop illegal behavior and encourage understanding and respect for the law using positive peer pressure in a formal, youth-led court setting. Classes begin in September and run one evening a week for seven weeks. Registration for all area middle and high school students and their parents will be August 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wilda Marston Theater, 3600 Denali St. For more information, call 274-5986. |
