Computer Naming Conventions

Naming Servers

Server names will be up to a maximum of nine characters and will be lower case.

The first two characters will always be the location abbreviation as indicated by the attached list from Library Resources.

The next two to five characters will designate the server’s function and will always be alpha letters. If a server is used for multiple functions, it will be referenced by the highest function it performs based on the following list. The list is based on priority of the function. In the example below a server that is a domain controller has a higher function than a management server. If a server is used for a single application, it will be given a name distinctive to that application. Examples of server functions and hierarchy are listed below.

The last two characters will always be numbers to indicate how many servers perform that function. Single digit numbers will start with a leading zero, example 01, 02.

Test servers will be indicated by a “t” after the function code.

Naming Workstations

Workstation names will be up to a maximum of nine characters and will be lower case.

The first two characters will always be the location abbreviation as indicated by the attached list from Library Resources.

The next two to five characters may indicate the workstation’s function or location in the building.

The last two characters will always be numbers to indicate how many workstations in a given room. Single digit numbers will start with a leading zero, example 01, 02.
