Early career educators met on Saturday, October 24th at East High School for the first ever ASD New Teacher Institute. These fifty-six educators, all with less than three years of career experience, spent a sunny Saturday thinking about and expanding their professional repertoire of skills related to Let's Connect!: Building Classroom Communities. Collaboration and enthusiasm were abundant!
Vickie Blakeney kicked things off with an interactive session on Social & Emotional Learning: More Than a Buzz Word followed by Ed Tech breakouts on Technology - A Trio of Tools and SiteBuilder Web Presence. Amanda Duvall, Ross Johnson, Amy Frackman and Marilyn Doore headed up the Ed Tech presentation team. Teachers had hands-on opportunities with SiteBuilder and overviews of Atomic Learning, Discovery Streaming and NetTrekker.

The afternoon focused on Improving Parent Teacher Conferences and Cross Cultural Communication. Linda Carlson, Executive Director of Elementary Education, Wendy Sept, East High School Assistant Curriculum Principal, and Amy Goodman, Middle School Literacy Support Teacher, presented hands-on sessions for improving communication at parent/teacher conferences. Marina Gantz, English Language Learners Support Teacher, presented with special guest appearances from two ASD bilingual tutors, Mary Kim and Gregory Teve. Jim Lepley, AEA President, provided closing remarks related to Discipline and Humor: Laugh, Listen and Learn.
Response to the New Teacher Institute has been overwhelmingly positive. Two more Saturday sessions will be offered this year, January 30th and March 20th. Early career educators should mark their calendars, as it now appears possible to include many more participants at the next two sessions.
