Blaze Sports Alaska

Blaze Sports AlaskaFor many children with physical disabilities, participation in athletics can present a variety of barriers. For athletes with physical disabilities, these barriers might reduce or even eliminate the opportunity for you/your child to participate at the level he or she would like. Teachers in the APE department are excited to volunteer with Challenge Alaska to offer the Blaze Sports Program which provides an opportunity for you/your child to participate in a variety of athletics for people with physical disabilities right here in Anchorage.

The Blaze Sports Program provides sporting opportunities for people with physical disabilities comparable to those provided for non-disabled persons. Blaze Sports introduces able and interested students with physical disabilities, teachers and coaches to adaptive sport instruction and competition. The program also provides news and interactive resources for all students, teachers, and coaches. In addition, the Blaze Program exposes participants to elite international and Paralympic athletes.

Athletics that might be available include:

  • Wheelchair tennis – traditional tennis with modifications
  • Wheelchair basketball – traditional basketball with modifications
  • Goalball – sport for the visually impaired with use of an audible ball
  • Track & field – traditional track & field with both wheelchair and non-wheelchair events
  • Wheelchair power soccer – traditional soccer played with modifications
  • Swimming – a variety of traditional swimming events
  • Cycling – traditional bicycle/tandem or handcycle
  • Skiing – cross country and alpine skiing with use of adaptive equipment
  • Sled Hockey – traditional hockey with use of adaptive equipment
  • Sitting Volleyball – traditional volleyball with modifications
