Adapted Physical Education (APE)
Teaching Strategies
Motor Development Class
This class is for those students that are on the borderline of
qualifying for Adapted PE services, the kind
of awkward, uncoordinated students.
The concept is very simple, just practice, practice, practice
the basic motor skills. These kids for reasons beyond their control,
are not getting exposure to locomotor activities, i.e.; just playing
on the playground, etc.
You, as physical education instructors, have the skills and ideas
for a great motor development class. I know that
time is what we have so little of, but if you
can find that spot, it will be so beneficial for these kids.
-
one or two extra periods per week, offer
a 20 30 minute motor class
-
just have them skip, hop, jump, run, catch,
throw, toss at targets, basic obstacle courses,
jump rope
-
this does not have to take that much extra
time for planning
Just give these kids the opportunity to practice and develop their
motor skills!
