Fitness In Special Populations/Adapted Exercise Peer Tutor

Introduction

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to acquire experience with persons with disabilities within the area of exercise. Also, students will help to facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities within a specific classroom setting. The regular classroom setting chosen will be the physical education classroom as this class will provide the needs of the fitness goals and objectives for the special needs students.

This course will offer a wonderful opportunity for learning for the peer tutor and the student with special needs.

The course will be very structured. There will be readings, evaluations, attendance, projects to hand in, data collection and very structured orientation classes that will provide the peer tutor with information from specialists with the field of services provided for students with special needs.

Some of the specialists involved will be in the following fields of study: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Resource, Special Education Resource, School Nurse, Psychologist. Hopefully, the contact with these Specialists will provide an opportunity for the peer tutor to pursue a career in one of the fields mentioned above.

Goals

  1. Facilitate the philosophy of inclusion within the physical Education setting

  2. Enhance students' knowledge of different types of disabilities as they relate to movement experiences.

  3. Increase students' knowledge of limitations of different disabilities as they relate to fitness within the physical education setting

Objectives

1.
  1. students will participate in a peer tutor program within the physical education class for 50 minutes 5X per week for a period of one semester ( 18 weeks )
  2. students will work with an assigned student with a disability as a "buddy"/peer tutor
2.
  1. students will participate in two 50 minute orientation classes before working within the physical education class with their "buddy"
  2. students will be given 2 exams / mid term and final which will pertain to 50% of required reading & 50% to activities within the class
3.
  1. students will give two adaptations of a physical education activity (written)
  2. students will give a written evaluation of the class and sell
