Workforce Development

A great deal of focus has been placed on the negotiations between the state and oil companies on the proposed natural gas-line project and the major shortages in construction, health-related occupations, and others due to an aging workforce. While the negotiations continue, the Anchorage School District is concentrating on how to support that project through workforce development. One of the criticisms of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline project was the high influx of workers from the Lower 48, particularly in the project management tier. Putting Alaskans first in line for gas-line jobs is one of the major goals for the district, which partners with other institutions
such as the University of Alaska Anchorage, the Alaska Works Partnership and organized labor to achieve such goals.

The School Board is requesting establishment of a statewide task force to plan for improving workforce development opportunities and training statewide.

The board also supports adequate and equitable funding for career development opportunities for students at all grade levels, while meeting the requirements of the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam and demands of the No Child Left Behind Act and the Individual with Disabilities Act.

The Alaska Workforce Investment Board must be empowered to deal with these critical issues and have a direct reporting relationship to the Governor’s Office.
