Senate
The Senate is composed of 100 Members, 2 from each State, who are elected to
serve for a term of 6 years. Senators were originally chosen by the State
legislatures. This procedure was changed by the 17th amendment to the
Constitution, adopted in 1913, which made the election of Senators a function
of the people. There are three classes of Senators, and a new class is elected
every 2 years. Senators must be residents of the State from which they are
chosen, at least 30 years of age and must have been a citizen of the United
States for at least 9 years;

A member of the Senate for over 35 years,
Ted Stevens is Alaska's senior Senator. Stevens' tenure
in the Senate makes him the fifth most senior member
among his colleagues, and first among Republicans.
Stevens holds the position of Senate President
Pro Tempore. He is also the Chairman of the Appropriations
Committee, responsible for annually allocating more
than a half-trillion dollars in federal funds among
various government programs, agencies
and departments.
As President Pro Tempore, Stevens presides over the Senate in the absence
of the Vice President. The President Pro Tempore is
also the third person in the line of succession for
the Presidency, following the Vice President
and the Speaker of the House. In addition, the President
Pro Tempore is a member of the party leadership team.

A member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator
Murkowski Chairs its subcommittee on Water and Power,
and serves on its subcommittees
on Energy, and Public Lands and Forests. Murkowski also
is a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works
Committee, serving on the subcommittees of Transportation
and Infrastructure, and Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water.
In addition, Senator Murkowski serves on the Veterans
Affairs Committee and the Indian Affairs Committee.
House of Representatives
The House of Representatives comprises 435 Representatives. The number
representing each State is determined by population, but every State is
entitled to at least one Representative. Members are elected by the people for
2-year terms, all terms running for the same period. Representatives must be
residents of the State from which they are chosen, at least 25 years of age and
must have been a citizen for at least 7 years.
