Agenda for April 6, 2011
1. Reference issues - Dona Helmer wanted a discussion on an overview of what various committee members are doing in reference collection development and several individuals shared current practices at the meeting. Several indicated that they do transfer some reference materials to the regular stacks, but all acknowledged continuing with reference additions to the collections.
2. Fairy tales, fables, folklore project - Ruth Jean mentioned that a small amount of work remains on bringing all material in this area into 398.2 with use of the original author as the cutter.
3. Literary form (genre) now has reached 640 items – Ruth Jean reported that this has grown to over 640 items and that you can examine the choices in the genre search box in TLC. An up-to-date list is also on the Library Resources web page at: http://www.asdk12.org/depts/Library-resources/wwwLR%hom%page
4. TLC series river – a discussion was made on the fact that the TLC river series is a limited list of selected series with TLC of what the company provides in the ASD OPAC. The TLC series river is based on actual content in the ASD collections. It is not a complete list of series in ASD by any means. Very limited.
5. ASD OPAC series reality check – The series fields continue to grow in ASD OPAC and so far TLC does not allow series numbers after the series title to be retrieved easily. Promise from TLS indicates that this will happen in the future.
6. Dewey revision in DDC 23 – Library Resources will be working with the next revision of the Dewey Decimal Classification schedule starting this summer. Some changes are noted for the following:
Elimination of dual headings i.e:
004-006 Computer science
[was Data processing Computer science]
Elimination of unbalanced spans
305.805-.89 Specific ethnic and national groups
[Will become]
305.805 - .809 Ethnic and national groups with ethnic origins from more than one continents, of European descent
305.81-.89 Specific ethnic and national groups

340 Law
370 Education
740 Graphic arts and decorative arts
777 Cinematography and videography
796 Athletic and outdoor sports and games
Note: Useful classification inks will be on the Library Resources web page starting next fall
7. Graphic novels – Most of ASD school libraries are working with the placement in 741.5; MARC 082 will continue to use 741.5; alternate call numbers will appear in MARC 984.
8. OCLC statistics - Library Resources acknowledgement was provided by OCLC that ASD Library Resources is a significant contributor to the library work that is going on by all library systems in Alaska. Ruth Jean shared emails about this development. We have over 330,000 individual MARC records in ASD OPAC itemizing over 1.2 million holdings.
9. Sound recording material awareness – some new developments are occurring in cataloging routines for sound recordings. Subject headings for the following are:
Playaways
Audiobooks
Talking books
Sound media player
Digital audio player
Books on a digital player
Children’s audiobooks
Children’s talking books
CDs

Cassettes

Library Resources will also add sound recording subject headings to book MARC records that include a compact disc in the inside cover of the book.
10. Alternate call number activity – ASD OPAC conveys over 9,000 in the system
11. Sending barcode with your First Search printout; two letter code – Ruth Jean would like as much ease as possible when you send your First Search printouts to her LRD portfolio. Please include your two-letter school code and your barcode.
12. CM records in media booking system – Library Resources continues to replace Curriculum Media brief records with full MARC records when possible. These MARC records do appear in the ASD OPAC.
13. Variant title work; TLC limitation in searching with title segments – Ruth Jean explained that the MARC field 246 for variant titles has been expanded since we moved to the new library software. Requests for more title access are accommodated by use of MARC 246.
13. ISBN updates need to come with First Search email – Ruth Jean reminded that ISBN updates are more easily inserted into ASD OPAC when accompanied by a FS from OCLC.
Meetings in 2011-2012 will be the first Wednesday in October, December, February, and April for forthcoming year. Meetings will begin at 3 p.m in the ASD Center, Ebony Room.
Ruth Jean thanked the committee members for their participation during the school year. Several committee members commented on the congeniality of effort of the committee members. It has been a most pleasant year overall.
