FAQ's (taken from 6th Grade Orchestra teacher Shonti Elder's site)

Does my student need to perform in the concerts?

Yes, orchestra is a performance class. We need to have all of the performers in our concert. There will be a concert during school in December and May. There will also be two evening concerts; the North Area Festival and Sonic Boom.

What if my student can't come to the evening concerts?

If your student has a schedule conflict, or no transportation, then Mrs. Elder needs a note from home explaining that at least a week before the concert. If there is an emergency, then I need a note the first orchestra class after the concert.

When will the evening concerts be?

What do I need to know about performing in a concert?

We ask the students to wear white shirts, and black or dark pants or skirts. Clothes do not need to be expensive, and Mrs. Elder has some extra clothes if needed. It looks very professional for the students to wear similar outfits. If a students do not wear the proper clothes, they can still play but they might feel awkward to be dressed differently. What can I do to help my student become a good musician?

You can help your child by encouraging him or her to practice 15-20 minutes five days a week. They should have a quiet place to play, and use a music stand. Be sure to listen to your musician, and show that you appriate their progress. Have the student always bring the instrument and music to school on orchestra class days. Come to their concerts and show them how proud you are of their playing!

Do you play religious music?

At our December concert we will play some music from different religious backgrounds. If a student is not allowed to play certain music because of their family religion, the student can simply not play that tune. It's not a problem. I want to make sure that all children feel comfortable with that choice. ASD Policy on Religious Music

What is Honor Orchestra?

Honor orchestra is a separate performing group that features some of the best sixth grade players from throughout the Anchorage School District. All students will receive the music, but only those who would like to audition will need to play it. Auditions will be in mid-December. Those who pass the auditions have rehearsals on Tuesdays after school at Begich Middle School for two months.
