STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW
EXAMPLES OF WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO

Atoms are building blocks of all matter.

1. All matter is made up of atoms, which are far too small to see directly through an optical microscope. The atoms of any element are alike but are different from atoms of other elements. Different arrangements of atoms into groups compose all substances. (AKSci - A.1)

o Construct a model of an atom placing neutrons, protons and electrons in their appropriate positions relative to each other and identify the charge of each subatomic particles.

Matter may undergo changes.

1. When matter undergoes a physical change, some physical properties of the matter may change, but the structure remains the same. (AKSci - A.2, A.8a)

o Identify examples of physical change.

2. Increased temperature means greater average energy of motion, so most substances expand when heated. In solids, the atoms are closely locked in position and can only vibrate. In liquids, the atoms or molecules have higher energy; are more loosely connected, and can slide past one another; some molecules may get enough energy to escape into a gas. In gases, the atoms or molecules have still more energy and are free of one another except during occasional collisions. (AKSci - A.2, A.8a)

o Compare motion of particles in a gas, liquid, and solid.

o Design and conduct an experiment that illustrates the motion of particles.

Matter has properties that can be measured.

1. Substances have characteristic physical properties such as their melting and freezing point, luster, malleability, tensile strength, electrical and thermal conductivity, solubility, and density. (AKSci - A.1, B.1)

o Design a toy and defend the choice of materials used based on the material's characteristic physical properties.
