Safety On the School Bus

Students who live more than a mile and a half from school, or must cross a roadway designated as hazardous, are provided school bus transportation.  Students who are on zone exceptions must provide their own transportation to and from school, unless approved in writing in advance by the transportation department.

School buses are the safest form of transportation in the United States.  According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, school buses are nearly 8 times safer than passenger vehicles.  But children must take care when boarding or leaving the bus.

Seat Belts on School Buses

Diesel Exhaust Sampling

In 2002, the Director of Transportation Services, Steve Kalmes requested sampling of diesel exhaust on school buses during morning and afternoon routes. EHS-Alaska, Inc. performed the sampling and provided this report of its results: "ASD School Bus Diesel Exhaust Sampling Report" (PDF)
