Cyberbullying

Printable version Printable version of Facts about Cyberbullying

What is Cyberbullying? Any kind of harassment, insults and humiliation that uses mobile, wireless, or Internet-related technology in a way that hurts another child, preteen or teen. (Cyber-harassment is when an adult is involved as the abuser or victim.)

Facts about cyberbullying

Cyberbullies are mostly 9 to 14 years old.

Many cyberbullies are victims of offline bullies (revenge)

Boys tend to send one-on-one messages, pass around offensive images, hack in systems and steal passwords.

There was a site that was closed down for technology reasons after receiving 70,000 visits in two weeks. Visitors could click on a high school and post their own insults of real students and leave false names.

Technology allows bullies to unleash put-downs, nasty rumors and humiliating pictures in e-mails, blogs (Web logs), text messages, etc.

Girls tend to cyberbully through communications and offensive messages sent to victim or made public.

Bullies can strike victims at home!

It is especially prevalent in affluent suburbs (high-speed Internet and kids are technically adept)
