Bullying Topics

What a Passive-Submissive Victim Looks Like

  • Anxious
  • Insecure
  • Depressed
  • Low self-esteem
  • Look upon themselves as failures - do not see themselves as star kids
  • Often do not have a single good friend in the classroom!
  • Not teasing/aggressive in their behavior - not provoking bullying - not "asking for it"

Dan Olweus' studies show…

  • Suicidal ideation is 5 times as common

  • Over a lifetime - victims in grade 5 were followed to age 24; the victims had not been victimized for 7-10 years but still showed higher depression, lower self-esteem. They did not grow out of it - it had lifetime effects.

Boys are…

  • Physically weaker
  • Cautious
  • Sensitive
  • Difficulty in asserting themselves - contributes to them being victimized
  • Related victimization clearly increases and augments these negative adjustments
