Aggressors, Victims, and Bystanders (AVB)
Quotes from students, parents, teachers and administration
From a Proud Parent…
My daughter, who is a 7th grader at an area MS, recently had an experience I
would like to share with others. She was standing at her locker when she
heard a student harassing a boy who was a few lockers down from her. The
student was using some very derogatory terms and had his victim very shaken
up. My daughter first checked in with the student being teased to see if he
was okay then headed down the hallway to confront the aggressor. She blurted
out, "What the heck do you think you are doing?" The aggressor seemed
surprised by this and said, "Why is it a problem for you?" She then told
him, "You can't do that to someone!" His response was, "I'm sorry it upset
you." Her last response to this individual was, "It's not me you have to
apologize to it's him!" We have talked to our daughter many times since this
incidence about not only how proud we are of her courage to stand up to the
aggressor but how a bystander really carries a great deal of power to change
a negative norm around bullying and harassment. I wanted to get the word out
that AVB is truly making a difference in our schools as evidenced by my
daughter's experience.
