English As a Second Language Tutorial

Eligibility with the Bilingual Education Program

A program designed for bilingual students to support specific areas of need as well as monitor the academic progress in the core classes. Emphasis is placed on study skills and organization. The tutorial teacher collaborates with the core subject teachers to provide a cohesive learning environment for the bilingual student. The program will foster cross-cultural understanding, cultural materials and multicultural activities. The ESL class replaces one elective for a semester or a full year.

This is a beginning English as a second language (ESL) course designed for monolingual speakers of another language (i.e.,students who speak little or no English). The course content, activities and instruction in the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught on a basic, yet sequential level. Grammar, vocabulary development, word attack skills, study skills, reading comprehension and oral language are included in teaching the four skill areas. This course fulfills the Anchorage School District language arts requirements.

This is an intermediate English as a second language (ESL) course designed for bilingual students who are predominantly speakers of another language or who are bilingual in two or more languages. Course content expands upon that in Beginning ESL. Grammar, vocabulary development, word recognition and attack skills, reading comprehension, mechanics of writing and increased fluency are included in the instruction and activities of the four skill areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing). This course fulfills the Anchorage School District language arts requirement.

This is an advanced English as a second language (ESL) course designed for bilingual students who are mostly proficient in spoken English, but needs strengthening in reading, comprehension, writing and/ or literacy skills. Course content includes instruction and activities in all four skill areas and continues to elaborate upon the Intermediate ESL class. The Advanced ESL curriculum parallels that of the mainstream language arts, but is tailored to meet the needs of students with a non-English background. This course fulfills the Anchorage School District language arts requirement.

This course is designed for and who need targeted assistance in the content areas of math and English; who are non-English-proficient or limited-English-proficient; and who need targeted assistance in accessing and comprehending the content and language of the mathematics curriculum. This course covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, estimation, percents, solution of word problems, calculator applications and mathematics content vocabulary.

This course is designed for students who are identified and assessed as being non-or limited-English-proficient according to state guidelines and district procedures. This course will focus on world geography and world or American history. It will introduce students to the vocabulary, concepts, and processes of the social sciences and relate them to the students, the student’s school, community and current events. This course is designed for students who have been identified and assessed as being non- or limited-English-proficient according to state guidelines and district procedures. Instruction supports the development of English proficiency in the five skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehension. Reading and vocabulary development are emphasized and are presented at students' English language proficiency and reading levels. The program supports students' culturally diverse backgrounds using culturally sensitive and relevant materials.
