English-as-a-Second Language (ESL)

Teaching English-as-a second language to students from around the world and right here in AlaskaEnglish-as-a-Second Language (ESL) at the middle school level is part of the English Language Learners Program (formerly the BMEP) that is required by law and funded entirely by the state. The purpose of the program is to teach English-as-a-second-language and other academic needs to students who come from homes in which a language other than English is spoken.

The secondary program consists of:

English-as-a-second language (ESL) classes are available to bilingual students taught by certificated teachers. The ESL courses are designed to meet the survival and academic needs of bilingual students, as well as to help students earn the necessary English credits to graduate.

ESL content classes offer bilingual students, who may have limited English proficiency, an opportunity to enroll in social studies, science, and/or math courses taught by certificated teachers trained in those subject areas. Students are able to earn necessary credits for graduation.

The Newcomers' Center offers monolingual students in grades 7-12 an opportunity to enroll in a two and one-half hour block period of intensive English language instruction. Certificated teachers teach the class with assistance from a bilingual tutor; a full-time bilingual/ESL counselor is assigned to work with students, parents, and staff at the home schools. Students are taught the necessary survival skills as well as basic concepts in language arts, social studies, science, math, and health education. The NC is located at the King Career Center and transportation is provided for students from their home school.
