Writing Strategies for middle school ESL students

For fluency, grammar and vocabulary development

• Descriptive/ Narrative:
  • Fast write
  • Quick write
• Daily writing activities
• Picture writing – descriptive
• Sentence Fluency
• Daily Oral Language
• Phonemic awareness – oral /written
• Sticker/picture writing
• Complete the doodle
• Sketch to stretch
• Find the Abbrevs! (Newspaper ads /magazine)
• Label the Room – With a partner, students write down everything they see. Then they classify the words according to material ( e.g. glass, wood, plastic), or alphabetize the words , or…you get the idea.
• Categorize the sports!  - Similar to above from newspaper ads, catalogues, etc.
• Written conversations – with a partner, students write messages to each other. Each writes and then they exchange messages. They respond in writing to their partner’s message. The teacher can provide a topic if wanted.
• Word hunts – Students find words that fit the spelling pattern of the week. Students have to explain how the words they find fit the pattern.
