Writing Strategies for middle school ESL students

For fluency, grammar and vocabulary development
- Descriptive/ Narrative:
- Daily writing activities
- Picture writing – descriptive
- Sentence Fluency
- Daily Oral Language
- Phonemic awareness – oral /written
- Sticker/picture writing
- Complete the doodle
- Sketch to stretch
- Find the Abbrevs! (Newspaper ads /magazine)
- Label the Room – With a partner, students write down everything they see. Then they classify the words according to material ( e.g. glass, wood, plastic), or alphabetize the words , or…you get the idea.
- Categorize the sports! - Similar to above from newspaper ads, catalogues, etc.
- Written conversations – with a partner, students write messages to each other. Each writes and then they exchange messages. They respond in writing to their partner’s message. The teacher can provide a topic if wanted.
- Word hunts – Students find words that fit the spelling pattern of the week. Students have to explain how the words they find fit the pattern.
