In January 2002, the federal law that governs
public education was re-authorized and named
the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This law
brings major reforms to public schools and is
designed to increase accountability and improve
student achievement.
If you are a classroom aide, tutor, or
teacher assistant working in a school that
receives Title I federal funding, you must
meet the following NCLB requirements:
- Have an associate’s degree; or
- Have two years of higher
education (at least 48 credits); or
- Pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment (or HELP Assessment) and demonstrate the ability to assist in instruction via the standards checklist located on the DEED Web site.
Notice of Cancellation and Change
NCLB Paraprofessional Requirements
As of December 31, 2009, the Paraprofessional HELP Assessment will no longer be available for meeting Title I NCLB paraprofessional requirements. The company that supplies the HELP test is discontinuing it.
On December 12, 2009, the State Board of Education adopted the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment as a replacement test. However, the Alaska Department of Education has indicated that the new test will not be fully approved until February of 2010. Consequently, the Anchorage School District is cancelling all of its remaining HELP support classes and test sessions scheduled for the 2009-2010 school year.
Details regarding future classes and test sessions supporting the new test will be announced once the ASD receives needed information from DEED and ETS.
