Limited H1N1 availability postpones some ASD vaccine clinics
Due to limited availability of the H1N1 vaccine in the state of Alaska, the district is forced to revise its vaccination plan originally developed by ASD and city officials. The school-based vaccination clinics will begin on Nov. 2 as scheduled at all elementary schools. Middle, high and secondary alternative school clinics must be rescheduled for a later date, most likely in December when deliveries of the vaccine are expected to be more robust. The district will continue to work closely with city and state officials regarding school-based vaccination clinics and vaccine availability.
“In the past several days, it has become apparent that there would be a vaccine shortage,” said Mark Mew, director of Security and Emergency Preparedness. “We immediately began working on a back-up plan, which we switched to this afternoon. The district understands this may be an inconvenience and could cause confusion for parents but we must make changes due to the unavailability of the vaccine.”
Each school will notify parents and guardians of the clinic date scheduled for their school. The vaccine is not mandatory and will only be given on scheduled clinic dates with signed parent/guardian permission.
