Student-created book earns recognition

(Anchorage, AK) 5/18/10:  Educators at Creekside Park Elementary are celebrating the publication of student Salvation Ah-Sam’s book in a big way. Salvation was recently notified that her book, “When I was Young in Samoa”, has been selected as one of 26 winners in the Nationwide Learning National Book Challenge.

More than one million students from approximately 7,000 elementary, middle and high schools, and colleges participate in the student publishing project each year sponsored by Nationwide Learning, Inc., located in Topeka, Kan.

Salvation spent several weeks writing and illustrating her book. “When I was Young in Samoa” is about the author’s younger years in Samoa.  She tells of her favorite food of the region, fried rice.  Readers can also find about her other favorites including animals, activities and school subjects.  Salvation is very articulate with words and her illustrations within the book are brilliant. As a reward, Salvation will receive a $100 scholarship prize.

The criteria for selection include an interesting subject line or storyline, colorful illustrations, following publishing guidelines, and if the book would make an appealing sample to promote publishing to schools throughout the United States.

Nationwide Learning's writing enrichment program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate, and publish full-color, hardbound books for free.

The winners are listed online at nationwide-learning.com. For more information about this student publishing program, contact Nationwide Learning at 800-867-2292.

Nationwide Learning, Inc., of Topeka Kansas, publishes books for schools under the Studentreasures and StudenTales brand names. More than 15,000 elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as colleges, participate in the National Book Challenge.
