The following news release is shared on behalf of STEM AK.

ROV Riot coming to Anchorage on April 21

Juneau, AK (April 16, 2012) – The 2012 Anchorage School District (ASD) ROV Riot will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 starting at 9:00 AM at the Bartlett High School pool. ROV stands for Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV). Polaris Northstar K-12, Gruening Middle School and Begich Middle School will be participating in this year’s event.

The ROV Riot competition is a collaborative effort of the Anchorage School District and STEM AK, a Program of the Juneau Economic Development Council, with generous support from ExxonMobil Corporation.

The ASD ROV Riot is more than just a competition; it is an opportunity for Middle and High School students to collaborate and share design tips, strategies and learn a bit more about cooperative problem solving and team work. Students show off both individual and collective team talent as they maneuver an obstacle course, retrieve underwater objects, and cap a simulated broken oil well leaking oil into the Gulf of Alaska.

Teams will be given 30 minutes prior to the start of the competition to view the playing field and make modifications to their ROVs. Teams may modify their ROVs to perform specific mission tasks; however, allowable modifications are at the sole discretion of the judges. Once the competition begins, no additional modifications will be allowed.

Teachers, parents, and other adults are not eligible to participate as team members, but may serve as advisors or mentors. The public is invited to attend.
