West High team took on the world
A quartet of West High sophomores successfully fulfilled a year-long goal by representing Alaska at the 10th Annual Academic WorldQuest National Competition in Washington D.C.
Madelyn Boslough, Aleah Kennedy, Katie Weddleton and Stella Woo won the WorldQuest Alaska 2012 competition in February and traveled to the nation's capital in March. The students didn't compete on the same team in 2011, but vowed to do so in 2012.
WorldQuest is a team game that tests competitors' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history and culture. The World Affairs Councils of America started the national contest in 2003. Participants come from high schools around the country that work with the World Affairs Council network.
The experience enjoyed by Boslough, Kennedy, Weddleton and Woo included receptions at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. Boslough joined five other competitors from around the country and modeled traditional Saudi dress during the Saudi reception.
International Baccalaureate program and English teacher John Ruhlin coached the West High team to its local win and during the trip to D.C.
