55 employees to receive layoff notices

Dozens of teaching, administrative and support positions eliminated for next year

The district is in the process of issuing 35 teacher and 20 support staff layoff notices. The position reductions are due to budget restraints for next school year.

More than 135 teachers were displaced, meaning they will not return to their current classroom and instead have accepted other teaching positions within the district. Federal and state law indicates that all teachers must be highly qualified in their content areas. Once teachers were placed in areas in which they are qualified and where space was available, 35 non-tenured teaching positions remained and those educators, mostly at the middle and high school level, are receiving layoff notices.

In addition to the teaching positions, 20 administrative and support staff members will be laid off. The reductions include seven administrative, technical and professional positions; 12 clerical and support positions; and one maintenance position.

"This is a very sad time because we are losing some incredible educators and staff who have given valued service to our students and our school district," said Superintendent Carol Comeau. "I am hopeful that over the next few months some of the people will be able to be recalled into a position."

If positions open over the summer, staff members may be recalled and reemployed by the district, said Eric Tollefsen, executive director of Human Resources. "The final number of layoffs and displacements is always a moving target because additional resignations and retirements come in, which allow some employees who were laid off to obtain positions in the district," said Tollefsen.

The district works with the state to provide transition services for staff members laid off from support positions. Assistance includes help with resume writing, interview skills and a listing of available services.
