Schools-Within-A-School

Bartlett High School, Humanities Interdisciplinary Program

The Humanities Interdisciplinary Program (HIP) is a school-within-a-school program for students in grades 10-12 at Bartlett High School that focuses on language arts and social studies. HIP teachers present content material in quarterly themes. During each theme, students do hands-on projects, group activities, presentations and workshops that apply the content material in a relevant, integrated format. A consistent Paedeia seminar component is also integrated into each quarter's theme. During the second and fourth quarter, several in-depth creative workshops are offered, and each student chooses one to focus on for a significant period of time.

World Languages Immersion Program

"Immersion" differs from traditional instructional approaches in which foreign languages are taught as separate subjects. In this program children are "immersed" in the language for half of the school day. English-speaking children learn to understand, speak, read and write the target language by hearing and using it constantly during normal classroom activities. Care is taken to ease students into the new language and to ensure comprehension. Progress and performance are carefully measured. The Anchorage School District has immersion programs in three languages: Japanese, Spanish and Russian. Contact the individual school for more information about the program or the World Language Coordinator, Janice Gullickson at 907-742-4848 or gullickson_janice@asdk12.org.
