Just last month, black belt Tyler Sawyer, a sophomore and honor student at East Anchorage High School, sparred his way to a silver medal at the U.S. Open Tae Kwon Do championships in Orlando, Florida.
Tyler competed in the 14-17-year-old division, winning several rounds to make it to the division championship. His silver medal has now been added to a long list of accomplishments for the Tae Kwon Do athlete.
In July 2006, Tyler earned a spot on the Junior Olympic team and competed at the World Junior Championships in Viet Nam in October 2006, where he earned fifth place in his division, competing against athletes from 65 countries.
The only other Alaska athlete to ever be named to the U.S. Junior Olympic Tae Kwon Do team was Tyler’s older brother, Justin. Both boys were coached by their father Tom, who works for the Anchorage School District at Clark Middle School.
Superintendent Carol Comeau offered her congratulations to Mr. Sawyer for Tyler’s “outstanding accomplishment."
