Take your choice

Most Anchorage School District students attend schools where standard academic curriculum is offered. At these facilities core curriculum includes language arts, math, social studies, health, physical education and a variety of electives. All schools offer special education services. However, one of the most exciting aspects of our district is the wide variety of educational choices available to students and parents. The district uses a lottery system to provide equal opportunity for students who request participation in a program or school other than the one assigned. The following are a few of the options:

ABC schools

These schools are highly structured and dedicated to academic excellence. ABC schools seek to build within each child a sense of responsibility, patriotism, citizenship, confidence and a positive self-image through proven academic achievement.

Central Middle School of Science is for students and parents who believe in a rigorous academic program with an emphasis on active participation. Students learn through traditional class work, independent study and group research.

Open optional programs

Open optional programs emphasize the physical, emotional and academic development of the individual child. Students of different ages are combined in multi-grade classrooms to work and learn together.

Polaris K-12 School

Polaris is a kindergarten through twelfth grade school designed for students and parents who are interested in self-directed learning and active participation in education.

Steller Secondary School

Steller is an individualized self paced education program for middle and high school students that maintains an informal and noncompetitive environment. Students learn the basics and skills to develop self-directed learning such as research, self assessment, leadership, and decision making.

Language immersion

The Anchorage School District's Japanese, Spanish and Russian immersion programs allow students to become proficient in a second language by the time they complete the kindergarten through grade six sequence of the program.
