Reading initiative
The reading initiative was developed in 1996 to ensure all
students are independent readers by the end of the
third grade. The initiative has raised the level of
literacy at all grade levels, promotes best practice
instruction and provides for early intervention for
struggling students.
Newcomers' Center
This half-day program, for students in grades 7 12, emphasizes
English and social studies for non- English speaking
individuals and/or recent immigrants.
21st Century Community Learning Centers
The 21st CCLC program provides after school enrichment classes
for K-8 students. The centers offer homework help,
tutoring, technology training, recreation and the arts. |
King Career Center
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Career Center offers vocational and
technical training in more than 20 occupations for students in
grades 10-12.
Online remediation
All district high schools provide immediate remediation for students
who are have not yet mastered basics in reading, writing
or math. With the help of online courses, students
are able to move at their own pace, bypass concepts
they have already mastered and gain competence in areas
they have struggled with.
Summer school
Summer school is open to district students who are in need of
remediation as recommended by a school counselor. The
classes are filled on a first come, first served basis
and provide intensive, direct instruction for students. |
