Elizabeth Peratrovich Day
In 1988, the Alaska State Legislature established February 16 as the annual Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. Elizabeth Peratrovich, an Alaskan Tlingit, was an important civil rights activist. She dedicated her life’s work on behalf of equality for all Alaskans. She was the driving force behind passage of the first anti-discrimination law in Alaska in 1945. Her efforts came nearly 20 years before the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.
