Zone Exemptions & Lottery
Online zone exemption & lottery system
Applications are currently being accepted for
2013-14 zone exemptions and the lottery for the 2014-15 school year. The next lottery will be in March 2014.
The Anchorage School District streamlined the zone exemption and lottery processes into one system, eliminating the need for paper and duplication of effort, thus saving the district time and money. The new system also provides a consistent and equal opportunity for students who request participation in an alternative program (lottery) or school outside their boundary area (zone exemption).
The new system is easy to use and delivers a fair, transparent and centralized solution. Parents also have the option to apply and check the status of their application on mobile devices. The system will produce randomly selected student lists that have been organized and ranked according to the district's lottery policy. It's important to note that ASD did not change its lottery policy, it just implemented a new system. No student shall be denied participation because of a learning disability, handicapping condition or special need. Lottery procedures are determined by school board policy 322.3.
Lotteries are held two times each year: during the last weeks of March and the week prior to registration in the fall.
Any student that wishes to attend a school different than their neighborhood school has the opportunity to complete a zone exemption application for the desired school. If there is space available and the student meets all the behavior and attendance requirements of the new school, a position to attend will be offered. If there is no space available for non-neighborhood students, then all applicants will be randomly placed on a waitlist by the lottery system. Approval or denial is based on space availability, grade level and gender balance, and specific program requirements determined by school board policy.
