Class Introduction: The eleventh grade is a survey of literature and writing designed to prepare the student for higher-level reading and thinking at the high school level. Students in this course will be exposed to a wide variety of accepted literature, both Western and multi-cultural, and must show ability to analyze literature in writing while demonstrating a satisfactory command of literary terms and the conventions of English.
While introducing the reader to a wide variety of literary styles and authors, this course seeks to improve writing, thinking, and communication skills. Students will learn to employ literary devices to analyze texts, effectively communicate through formal writing, and make practical use of technology. Themes involving coming of age, heroes, and conflict will be explored in many genres of literature, including novels, short stories, poems, plays, and non-fiction.
You can expect:
to study at least four major novels throughout the year as well as other genres/prose to write at least one to two formal essays per quarter to produce numerous informal writing or journal assignments per quarter to design one to two creative projects per quarter to give several oral presentations (informal or formal) each quarter to take approximately two major (unit) tests per quarter to complete nightly homework
