LOW VISION STUDENTS...

  • Seat the student near the blackboard or close to where the lesson or activity is taking place. Ask the student which is the best viewing position. Provide additional work, desk, or locker space for special equipment and books.
  • Glare produced from windows or fluorescent lighting should be reduced as much as possible. Proper classroom placement can partially or totally eliminate this problem.
  • When using transparencies on an overhead projector have the low vision student read directly from the overhead, or make a large print copy.
  • Use dark, large print materials with high contrast.
  • Encourage the student to use low vision aids when appropriate.
  • Using your eyes does not harm them. It is beneficial to encourage low vision students to use their residual vision.
  • You will not ruin your eyes by bringing reading materials really close. Encourage students to bring the material to their eyes instead of leaning over to get closer.
  • A low vision student's eyes may tire more quickly. A change of activity helps.
