PROGRAM SERVICES
Specialists
from the BVI Program develop IEPs in consultation with the
student's team members and provide information and recommendations
regarding the educational implications of the student's visual
impairment. In addition, BVI specialists may supply both teachers and
students with adapted instructional materials, books and specialized
equipment. BVI teachers also instruct low vision students in the use of
their residual vision, and provide training with low vision aids.
Orientation and mobility specialists teach travel skills to Blind/Visually Impaired students so that they are able to move safely and efficiently in their environment. The curriculum includes activities in concept development, motor and sensory development, cane instruction, travel with a sighted guide and use of low vision aids. BVI students receive services according to their special needs. Comprehensive evaluations are provided to determine the level and type of service needed. Students may receive direct or consultative services. Those served on a direct basis may have one-on-one instruction and receive specialized materials and/or equipment. Many students do not need regular instructional services from a BVI Specialist. For this reason the BVI specialist will work with the classroom teacher and/or teacher assistant on a consultative basis to adapt the curriculum and provide suggestions for modifying instructional techniques.
