TECHNOLOGY
Computers
and other technological advances have opened many doors for BVI
students. Due to the variety of adaptive devices students have access
to information through computers, and the internet. The
production of Braille and large print materials has also been greatly
simplified. Twenty years ago each word in a book had to be
Brailled manually. Now books can be scanned and downloaded into a
variety of formats- Braille, large print, digital and audio files.
Low
vision students in the ASD use the use programs like Zoomtext and WYNN, to scan and enlarge
their
classroom assignments. These
programs also have voice output so the text can be read to the student
with a computer generated voice. Braille reading students use
Braille laptop computers like the BrailleNote and
the Braille
Lite. These devices allow students to read Braille text, send
email, browse the internet, and word process using a portable
device. Students needing an adaptive keyboard can use Intellikeys to
have access to
commercial software.
The
BVI Program works with ASD's Assistive Technology Program to determine
appropriate technology based tools for students. Only a few of the
tools are listed here that help BVI students access the curriculum and
experience academic and personal success. Contact your child's
BVI teacher to find out about technology that would be appropriate for
your child.
