An emphasis on the Elements of Art and Principals of Design, presented in an “inquiry-based” program, centered on the four state Art Standards, and Art and art related careers are common threads across the district's K-12 art program.
All nine middle level and high schools are staffed with art teachers. Thirty-three elementary art specialists service 61 elementary schools, including grades 7-8 at Girdwood and Northern Lights ABC, and, Mt. Iliamna special needs students. The comprehensive, sequential art curriculum is followed in the regular school programs.

March is Music in Our Schools Month.
Every year, hundreds of Anchorage student musicians perform in community venues including the Performing Arts Center and the 5 th Avenue Mall. ASD students and their music teachers will share the creativity and enjoyment of song – through instrumental and vocal music. Please make plans to join us! Area Music Festivals are another opportunity to see ASD's talented musicians in action! These concerts will showcase the combined talent of elementary, middle, and high school students. Held at the feeder high schools, our Area Festivals are not to be missed. Choir Festivals begin March 3, at West High. Band and Orchestra Festivals commence on March 5 at Dimond and Eagle River High Schools, respectively.
Tune into the Music Department website for concert and festival information: http://www.asdk12.org/depts/music.
