Gender Equity Task Force

|
The Anchorage School District is developing new standards
for successful sports programs. In order to make this happen,
the district has set up a Gender Equity Task Force (GETF).
The goal of the GETF is to ensure compliance with Title IX.
For more information, contact Todd Arndt, High School
Supervisor, at 907-742-4250 or Margo Bellamy, EEO Director,

Gender Equity in Athletics
What is Title IX?
Title IX is the first comprehensive federal law to prohibit
sex discrimination
against students and employees. Title IX requires schools
to maintain policies, practices and programs that do
not discriminate
against anyone based on sex. The law is wide reaching,
affecting many school-based elements, including curriculum,
extracurricular activities,
and access to all school programs and services. If a school
is found to be
not Title IX compliant, the district can lose federal funds.
How does Title IX affect school sports?
In sports, Title IX addresses the availability, quality and
opportunities
that athletes receive. Schools can comply by showing
they have a
proportionate number of athletic opportunities for males
and females
or by continuing to expand opportunities for the under-represented
sex. Schools do not necessarily need to offer identical
sports but they
do need to provide an equal opportunity for females to
play in sports of
interest.
What should ASD do to achieve gender equity in athletics?
The Gender Equity Task Force held a series
of public hearings for
the purpose of discussing Title IX law requirements,
identifying potential
Title IX issues in our schools and to gather input
and suggestions
from the Anchorage community.
What's next?
The Gender Equity Task Force
will compile information gathered from
the public meetings and a survey of middle and high
school girls and present
a proposal to the School Board.
