The Big Five

ASD is in the fifth year of using the School Board adopted reading program, Houghton Mifflin. HM is based on scientific reading research. It includes the five essential elements outlined by the National Reading Panel for effectively teaching a comprehensive literacy program:

1. Phonemic Awareness

2. Phonics

3. Fluency

4. Vocabulary

5. Comprehension
