On March 14, 2005, Service High
School celebrated and welcomed
its first Indian Education Community
Counselor, Rachel Hoover.
Several Native leaders and dance
groups showed their support.
Nelson Angapak, Vice President
of Alaska Federation of Natives
and Mary Marks, ASD School
Board member were among the
guest speakers.
Principal Lou Pondolfino said, “We
were honored to have such guest
speakers. I know their words
made an impression on our (SHS)
community.” The Fireweed
Dancers performed, and Principal
Pondolfino added that many Native leaders and elders from
the community attended.
The students played a big role
in making the position become a
reality. Hoover said she has
been working with students to
shape the program, and they
are modeling what East and
West High Schools have done.
Principal Pondolfino said, “We
are fortunate to have Rachel’s
talent, energy and compassion.
She is off to a remarkable
start.” Hoover, who is Aleut
and hails from Port Graham,
intends to start a culture club
and to add classes next year. I hope all of you from West High had a good spring
break. We have only nine weeks with you until the
end of this year. We will hold another annual awards
ceremony at the end of this year. We will combine
it with the picnic that we hold during the last
week of school. This year students will be called
out of class to participate. Students must have
permission from their teachers if they have classes
outside the Cove.
On another note, Club has been active during the months of February and
March. Club will continue to be busy in April. We are fundraising to take
10 students to the Gathering of Nations next year. One of our big events
is a PowWow/Gathering here at West High in the Gym. There will be dancing,
of course, and we are going to auction-off wrapped surprise items that
will be fun for everyone. The date and time will be announced soon – we
will look forward to seeing you there.
All for now,
Glenna C. Kiana Maulding
