As easy as Tléix', Déix, Nús'k: Tying Math to Culture
The subject matter for this workshop is Numeration, Number Sense and Place Value with a primary focus on grades K through 2. Specifically, it shows ways to reinforce these concepts to Alaska Native and American Indian children through culturally rich experiences.
The activities modeled help children to understand basic number sense and to solidify their grasp of place value. Central to the approach taken is to teach mathematics through culture and culture through mathematics.
