My name is Amber Thomas and I am Inupiaq from Barrow, Alaska. I graduated
from the University of Idaho with a bachelors of science in American Studies
and American Indian Studies. I am the Indian Education Community Counselor.
Students must be Alaska Native/Native American and have filled out the 506
Form to receive services from our program. I am here to make sure native
students at Begich Middle School reach their true potential. I plan to do
this by providing the following services:
- Open communication between teachers, parents/guardians, and students
- Tracking absences & tardies
- Observing grades and missing assignments
- Offer tutoring
- Exposing students to extra curricular activities
- Providing positive mentors and role models
- Weekly native student gatherings
- Cultural events that educate and promote native pride
