I’m Karen A. Gauthier and my Cup’ik name is Naularan. I am originally from Chevak, Alaska. I was born to Gregory and Monica Slats. I have five brothers and two sisters, which I’m proud to have been born into a huge, close-knit family.
I speak my Cup’ik language fluently and it was my first language before learning the English language in school. I was brought up with the subsistence way of living and was taught the traditional values by my parents and family. My grandfather Joseph Friday along with other elders went to my school in Chevak and taught the students my Cup’ik culture and traditions. I was extremely fortunate to have been taught by the elders of Chevak. I enjoy berry picking, fishing and gathering greens. I also enjoy reading, beading and learning new ideas on how to improve my outlook in life itself. I truly enjoy spending time with family and friends.
My husband and I moved to Anchorage about twenty years ago. I have four stepchildren whom have given us eight beautiful grandchildren. We brought up my niece whom we consider her as our daughter and she is a junior at Dimond High School.
I graduated from Kashunmuit High School in Chevak. I am currently a senior at Alaska Pacific University and am currently taking a break to study my Praxis I and II.
I have been with Indian Education Program since 2002 and before that I was a bilingual tutor with Bilingual Program for Anchorage School District. I have been with Anchorage School District for twenty years. I tutor the native students at North Star Elementary in math, reading, writing and I share my native culture to the classes here during the month of November. I also teach native arts and crafts to the students. I enjoy working with the students here and it gives me great pleasure to see students succeed in their educational endeavors.
The best way to reach me is to call North Star Elementary and phone number here is 742-3800. I am at North Star Elementary from 8:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. |
