Multi-Sensory Instruction (MSI)

Background on MSI

The Anchorage School District offers a first through sixth grade Multi-Sensory Instruction (MSI) alternative program at both Northwood and Baxter Elementary schools. These are lottery programs as are the other alternative programs in our school district. Lotteries are normally held in March and August.

Some elementary schools offer specific MSI classrooms in first and second grades with trained MSI teachers. As a part of our school district's reading initiative, specific training in phonemic awareness and phonics has occurred with all district kindergarten, first and second grade teachers, as we work to infuse multi-sensory instructional practices into classroom instruction throughout the primary grades.

MSI Summer School

2007 was the 35th consecutive year of MSI Summer School, which is a part of the ASD Elementary Education Summer School. Almost 100 students participated for six weeks of instruction in the MSI approach for reading and language arts.

Teacher Training

The Multi-Sensory Instruction Program Office coordinates teacher training through the Anchorage School District and the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Classes are held in the summer.
