Physical Therapy

Safe lifting for your studentWheelchair

Each student has a special way to be transferred to/from his/her wheelchair. A physical therapist can help find the safest method of transferring a student and help train staff in safe lifting practices. However, there are common safe practices for all lifting.  They include the following steps:

  1. Plan your lift. Talk out loud. Count “One, two three.”
  2. You need a wide base of support and good shoes.
  3. Bend your knees. Lift with your legs.
  4. Keep your back in neutral position and do not twist your back as you turn. Move your feet instead of twisting your back.
  5. Keep the student (or whatever you’re lifting) close to your body.
  6. Exhale as you lift to keep from holding your breath. You can hiss like a snake or count out loud.
