Safe and Drug Free Schools
SDFS role within the Anchorage School District
|
- For the past 14 years, Safe and Drug Free Schools has operated within the Anchorage School District as a catalyst, systems change agent and social/emotional R&D unit. Our goal is to help the district morph the way it does business so that both the institution and its employees will interact with children and their families in a fundamentally different manner.

 |
- We work as a positive deviant team that strives to be congruent in our own child/person approach.
- We remain nimble, attuned to current developments, work through a multi-level approach and build working relationships/alliances.
- We put a premium on relationships as the unit of change and transformation.

- We have a proven track record over the past 14 years of helping ASD institutionalize programs, practices and policies that are improving the organizational/ social/ learning climates within schools.
- By most national standards, ASD is a leading pioneer in this work. Several national evaluators have attested to the radical change taking place within ASD.
- An increasing number of schools and staff members are implementing changes in the way they interact with families and children.

- These changes are starting to bear fruit in standard measures of reduced deficit student behavior and increased pro-social student behavior.
- We have seen a trend in declining student deficit behavior, i.e., alcohol use, drug use, violence, truancy, etc.
- We have also see an increase in the pro-social behavior of students, i.e. respecting each other, volunteerism, etc.
- ASD now have in place the instruments to gather and track this behavior over time, most of it down to the school level.
