AEA and ASD recognize the importance of having strong support for beginning educators and have established a partnership to insure that educators have access to trained mentors through the AEA/ASD Mentor Program.
The AEA/ASD partnership has established a procedure for an individual to go through a number of steps before a mentor/mentee match can occur.
Becoming a part of the mentor pool does not obligate you to or guarantee you a match, however following the steps below does provide the possibility that you will be asked to mentor a colleague.
Step 1

Ensure that you are an ASD certified educator who meets these requirements to become a mentor:
- At least 5 years of exemplary teaching experience, the past 3 years in ASD
- Possess and practice content knowledge and best practice strategies
- Be open-minded with a positive perspective
- Have strong interpersonal skills
- Work well with colleagues and have a genuine concern for others’ growth
- Demonstrate dependability, responsiveness, and responsibility

Step 3
Follow Up
Make sure you have been able to respond positively to the application queries. Respond promptly to any communication you receive from the ASD about areas that you have left blank, or were unable to respond to. |
Step 4
Training
When you have successfully completed the AEA/ASD Mentor Application Process via AppliTrack on the Employment link of the ASD website, TPD will invite you to sign up for the required one-credit graduate course, Mentor Communication Skills.
Please begin the application process at least a month prior to start date of course. The application process includes references from administrators and colleagues. When your application is complete and accepted, and you have received the invitation, you may sign up on MLP for Mentor Communication Skills.
After you have successfully completed Mentor Communication Skills, you will be placed on the AEA/ASD mentor database and are eligible to mentor should the occasion arise. |
