Current issues for substitutes
- Student Interns – Please submit official transcripts or clear copies of your official transcripts with your bachelors posted to Human Resources Department. You may upload your transcripts to your application in Applitrack.
- PE, Art, & Music – These jobs may be itinerant. This means you will travel to multiple sites during the course of the day. Please read/listen carefully to ‘special instructions’ for jobs of this type. If you cannot or are not willing to travel please cancel out of the job more than one hour before start time.
- Canceling a job – If you must cancel a job right before the start of the job, please call subdispatch and the school and let them know you are canceling.
- Illness – If you know you are not feeling well, please do not accept a job. This creates a problem for the school if you need to leave halfway through the job.
- Military Base Access Passes – Security rules for access to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson have changed for 2011-12. Please read our base access handout for details (PDF).
Substitute Teacher Training
ASD provides several resources to substitute teachers. There will be Substitute Teacher Training offered to those who are new to subbing and/or new to the ASD. Two substitute teacher trainings are provided and are available to all substitutes: an online assessment and face-to-face Classroom Management Training. All new substitutes are required to take the online assessment. Those who have one year or less of their own classroom teaching experience are required to take the face-to-face Classroom Management training. Registration for both of these trainings is through Training and Professional Development Department at 907-742-3846.
Computer-based
- The online assessment is required of all new substitute teachers except retired ASD teachers or nurses. It takes a minimum of one hour to complete.
Face-to-Face
A classroom management course is required to be taken within 30 days of employment for substitutes who have only one year or less of classroom teaching experience. This training is a full-day session (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.), which focuses on classroom management and safety. The schedule for the classes is below - please make your reservation as soon as possible as they fill up very quickly. Please call to cancel if necessary.
