Salary comparison between Mat-Su and Anchorage for five- and ten-year teachers

Incorrect.  The salary schedule for teachers in Mat-Su begins with “Step 0.”  The Anchorage School District schedule begins with “Step 1.”  This means that beginning teachers in Mat-Su start at Step 0 and would progress to Step 4 in five years.  In Anchorage the same teacher would start at Step 1 and progress to Step 5 in five years.  The author is comparing Step 5 for Anchorage (five years experience) with Step 5 for Mat-Su (six years experience).  The same logic is applied to the ten-year example.

Salary comparison between Mat-Su and Anchorage for thirteen-year teachers

The author compares a 13-year Mat-Su teacher with a Masters degree plus 45 credits to an Anchorage teacher.  Again, the Mat-Su Step 12 is equal to Anchorage Step 13 because of the “zero step.”  In addition, the Anchorage salary cited is incorrect.  The Anchorage salary for a thirteen year teacher with a Masters degree plus 45 credits is $58,748 plus a $500 Masters bonus ($59,248 total).

Corrections:

A thirteen year teacher in Mat-Su with a masters +45 earns $68,809

A thirteen-year teacher in Anchorage with a masters +90 earns $56,807
