Anchorage School District teachers were recently asked to refrain during the duty day from displaying bargaining related messages. Specifically, teachers were asked to remove purple buttons saying, “I don’t want to strike, but I will,” and “No contract, still working.” Teachers may wear the buttons during their duty free lunch and in the staff lounge.

The code of ethics governing the teaching profession states “an educator may not use professional relationships with students for private advantage or gain.” This provision of the Code of Ethics and Teaching Standards of the Professional Teaching Practices Commission is not limited to buttons, but applies to other forms of verbal, written and symbolic communication.
