RADMIND Distributed Servers Begin Rollout
April 2004
After successfully re-imaging 675 iBook and PowerBook computers at elementary
and middle school levels, the focus of the RADMIND Program has turned
to deploying distributed RADMIND servers in schools.
RADMIND is a free suite of UNIX tools developed by the Research Systems
UNIX Group at the University of Michigan for remotely maintaining the
file systems of client computers across a network. The fact that the 675
laptop computers are all running Mac OS X allows the district to use powerful
UNIX tools to better support users and their computers.
Deployment of these RADMIND servers is being implemented in a joint effort
by ASD Instructional Technology and Information Technology Departments.
The distributed RADMIND servers will enable more timely and meaningful
updates to the managed clients served by the district’s RADMIND
system. Successful testing of the distributed server model took place
at four district sites in early March and placement of production servers
in schools began at the end of March. It is anticipated that each elementary
and middle school will have a distributed RADMIND server online by May
of this year.
With these distributed servers placed in schools, they will help district
staff update and maintain these laptops both now and into the future.
