2008 After-School Workshops

The following free after-school workshops are being offered by the Educational Technology Department this spring. More workshops will continue to be added, so check back often. If you are interested, please sign up in MyLearningPlan.

We currently don't have any after-school workshops scheduled.

2008 Anchorage School District Summer Accademy (ASDSA)

These classes are currently being offered at ASDSA. To sign up for them you will need to register through MLP.

Block A: May 28 & 29, 2008

Take “AIM” with Clickers:  Assessment, Instruction, Motivation
Instructor: Martina Henke

This course is establishes a theoretical background regarding the concept of formative assessment and its impact on student achievement and teacher instruction. Participants will examine the concept of formative assessment within the context of classroom response systems, technology designed for easy construction and implementation of formative assessments. Participants will design various types of assessments based on their own curriculum and district and state standards.

NOTE: Participants must have access to CPS clicker systems.

Building a Classroom Website using iWeb
Instructor: Shelley Szipszky

Does the ASD website meet your needs? Would you like to spice up your
webpage? We will use iWeb to create custom web pages that you can add on to
your existing ASD website. Participants are encourage to bring a computer to
class if possible.

Making a Smart Classroom using SmartBoards and Interactive Response Systems (Clickers)
Instructor: Trisha Flanigan

Has your school acquired interactive whiteboards or an interactive response system? Do you just want to find out what all the excitement is about? Come see how using an interactive whiteboard, and an interactive response system can increase student engagement during your daily classroom instruction. Learn how to set-up and use the different interactive tools, as well as explore the gallery and educational websites related to the creation of interactive lessons. Create a lesson with the Notebook software and find out how an interactive response system can give you and your students immediate feedback.

Block B:

May 30 & 31, 2008

Bringing Social Studies into the 21st Century:  New Tools to Collaborate & Work
Instructor: Martina Henke

This course for secondary Social Studies teachers explores the 21st Century Skills essential for success in today’s rapidly changing and evolving world. Participants will explore ways to integrate these skills in the Social Studies classroom, with a particular focus on available software, online resources, and Web 2.0 tools. They will use Web 2.0 tools for reflection and collaboration during and after class and submit a lesson plan for using one or more of the tools.

Creative Projects with Kid Pix
Instructors: Trisha Flanigan and Shelley Szipszky

Learn to use the incredibly creative power of Kid Pix to enhance your
classroom lessons and allow students to produce imaginative projects. We’ll
explore a wide variety of ideas that easily integrate this software into
your existing curriculum.

 

Block C: June 2 & 3, 2008

Tools for Differentiation of Instruction
Instructors: Martina Henke and Patti Irwin

This course will establish a common theoretical background regarding the concept of differentiation in the secondary classroom.  We’ll introduce two district supported software programs to assist differentiation in the classroom:  Achieve3000 (Teenbiz3000) and NetTrekker d.i. Both of these support implementation of research-based differentiation strategies in secondary classrooms. Participants will create a lesson plan for using Achieve 3000’s engaging articles and learning activities in their classroom and a detailed netTrekker d.i. portfolio that includes site references and learning activities to differentiate instruction in their classrooms.

Don’t have time to explore the web for amazing sites that will enrich your
teaching and motivate your students? I’ve done the work for you and will
share a wide variety of web based tools which you can take back to the
classroom. Participants are encourage to bring a computer to class if

Important Note:
To sign up for a course, please register with MyLearningPlan (http://www.mylearningplan.com/). In order to finalize your registration for the class, you will also need to submit a UAA registration form and payment to UAA no later than two working days prior to the first class date. If your registration is not received by UAA by 5:00 PM two working days prior to the first class session, your name will be dropped from the class roster. We have had numerous cases where folks sign up in MLP, and then cancel at the last minute or just don't show up, which can keep other interested folks out of those slots and/or cause a class to be cancelled.

Any applicable ASD lab fees will be collected on the first night of class. Please note that this is separate from the course fee for UAA.

Please note it is important to pre-register to avoid the cancellation of classes.
